Most
of the volunteers, when asked about why they join the program, answered
they want to give back to the country what they received from the
country. As Iskolar ng Bayan whose education was subsidized by the
taxes of the people, a volunteer feels that the least they could
do is reach out to the communities and offer their services. In
the end, the volunteers believed that it was still them who gained
more after repeatedly joining the activities of Pahinungód.
The enriching experience of being a volunteer taught them more knowledge
and realizations. It gained them new-found friends. It gave them
a sense of satisfaction and fulfillment in knowing that once in
their life, they have touched another life.
Pahinungód
as a program was created in line with UP Manila’s objectives.
As part of UP Manila’s agenda of being a socially responsible
academic community, among others, Pahinungód has its service
programs to directly address the immediate and not-so-immediate
needs of the deprived communities and marginalized sectors of
the society. The University is aware that volunteer work already
existed even before Pahinungód was established. One of
the reasons why Pahinungód was created is to help better
facilitate other organizations in its community outreach projects
and institutionalize volunteerism in the University. It aims to
fan the flame of volunteerism and provides an opportunity for
selfless service.
Some
volunteers do it for payback. Others do it because it is needed.
Whatever the reason is, the program is here to help alleviate
the sufferings of the Filipino people through the willing service
of its volunteers. On the other hand, it also gives the volunteers
the opportunity to share to others their services and gives them
a sense of fulfillment. It has set its vision and mission in line
with the vision and mission of the university.
Vision
U.P.
in the service of the underserved communities of the nation through
volunteerism.
Mission
Prepare
and nurture a corps of volunteers committed to provide leadership
in the undertaking and implementation of community-oriented programs
complementary to the Teaching, Research and Extension functions
of the University.
