NEWS & UPDATES

September 2006

Pahinungód goes 13

On September 22, 2006, the Office of Ugnayan ng Pahinungód will be celebrating its 13 years of service. With the theme, “Pahinungód: Serbisyong Handog ng Pamantasan sa Bayan”, Pahinungód wants to encourage more UP constituents to be our partners in serving the marginalized communities of our country. The number of Iskos and Iskas continues to grow since 1993 as the University affirmed its service to the nation, as well as give our best to solve some burning issues in our nation and environment. We aim to continue the selfless service to those members of our society who need it.

At present, Pahinungód: Educational Assistance, Community Health, Community Social Welfare, and Advocacy. The Educational Assistance Programs help uplift the quality of public education in our country through the deployment of UP faculty members, students, and employees to share their expertise, time, or involvement in the tutorial service, teachers development and Gurong Pahinungód.

The Community Health Programs utilize the skills of health professionals of UP Manila - PGH and some of its partner agencies. This cluster offers Health Mission, Health Training, Health Education and Emergency Room Volunteer opportunities. On the other hand, the Community Social Welfare Programs include Program for the Street Children and Summer Immersion Service. The volunteers of these programs are made aware of the real situations in barrios & the streets and allow them to serve the community and the street kids from partner institutions.

And to promote volunteerism in the university, the Advocacy Program conducts room-to-room campaign as well as through the written media by its publications – Ang Pahinungód (a quarterly newsletter), Volunteerism in Action (a book series), and the Annual Report. To keep abreast of modern communication, the Pahinungód website was created (www.pahinungod.org) together with the audio-visual presentation to encourage more volunteers to join the program and sponsors to support our projects.

It has not been as easy as we want it to be but we shall keep on moving forward because we know that a number of people are waiting to be served and many national issues have to be resolved. Be part of our programs and experience how to be different. Let us keep the fire of volunteerism aflame until it reaches everyone and contribute our answer to the needs of our country.

Program for the Street Children

After the successful Kiddie Fest last May 20, 2006 at Purok Tipunan at Paz Mendoza Guazon Complex of the College of Medicine, the Program for the Street Children of Office of Ugnayan ng Pahinungód is now preparing for a stage show about a Maranaw epic tale that teaches the values of selflessness and humility.

Aiming to enhance the artistic abilities of the street kids and develop their social skills, this presentation will feature them dancing pangalay and kapamalong-malong, playing kulintang, sarunay, gandingan and agong; as well as acting and talking in our native tongue!  We have enough volunteers and logistics to make this event happen but we are still looking for sponsors and donors to help cover the production cost.

PLEASE HELP US HELP THEM.

We will accept any form of assistance to the Street Kids Program.

As of August 31, 2006, the Program for the Street Children want to thank the following sponsors:

  • ALFONSO YUCHENGCO FOUNDATION
  • MR. EDMOND DYOGI
  • MS. MARY JEAN MORANTE

Summer Immersion Service Program
