Who
may volunteer?
Anyone
in the University of the Philippines Manila, whether one is a
student, faculty, doctor, nurse, dentist, hospital support staff,
administrative personnel, research and extension personnel, or
alumni.
What
is expected of the volunteers?
Depending
on their capabilities, volunteers are expected to provide their
expertise and skills to the area or community they choose, then
share insights from their experiences upon their return. If you
are a medical professional, you may provide free consultations
to the residents of the community. If you are a student of medicine,
public health or the health sciences, you may assist in the operations
or conduct a health education to the local residents. There are
many programs to choose from. We most especially expect your cooperation
and dedication to the task.
How
long should they serve?
The
duration of volunteer work is at the discretion of the volunteers.
They may opt to volunteer for one mission or project that may
last a day, a week, a month or a year. The activities may be held
during weekends or on a weekday. Most of the schedule of the programs
are flexible and can be adjusted to the availability of the volunteers.
Is
there a support system for the volunteers in the community? What
can the volunteers expect from UP?
Yes.
The Ugnayan ng Pahinungod will ensure that a contact person or
a representative of a government agency or NGO will lend support
to the volunteer during his/her stay in the community. On the
part of UP, each volunteer will be monitored on a regular basis.
The volunteer may expect the program to provide all possible support
necessary for the success of his/her community work. Volunteers
need not worry about incurring any out-of-pocket expenses for
service they will render in the field. The Ugnayan ng Pahinungod
program will, to all extent possible, take care of such expenses
(including travel insurance) either by soliciting funds for them
or negotiating with partners and sponsors to cover such expenses.
What
is the Service Learning Option?
Here
in UP, the Service Learning Option (SLO) is a method of teaching
and learning that links study and service. Under SLO, the theories
and concepts a student learns in the classroom can be applied
to real-life situations by engaging in public service activities
as part of their coursework.
Does
Pahinungód accept donations?
Yes.
We also accept donations in cash or in kind. Your donation will
help fund the activities of the program. The money donated will
be used for the transportation and food expenses of the volunteers
and beneficiaries, acquisition of medicines and equipment, and/or
volunteers’ welfare nurturance activities. If goods are
received, it will be distributed to the communities where we conduct
health missions or to partner street children institutions.
